I was invited by Dr. Manuel López-Ibáñez to give a talk at the University of Manchester, Manchester, UK. The talk will be hosted by the Decision and Cognitive Science Research Centre on March 27th, entitled “FAIRTECH by design: assessing and addressing the social impacts of artificial intelligence systems”.
I was invited by The Data Lab to be a panelist at the Data & AI Ethics Meet-up. The meet-up took place on March 4th, at the Bayes Centre, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK, and my talk was entitled “PHAWM: Supporting society to assess AI”.
I had a paper accepted at the International Conference on the Applications of Evolutionary Computation (EvoApps, part of EvoStar). The paper is entitled “Optimizing the logistics operations of distribution network operators from a multinational electric utility company” and is the result of a collaboration with Neoenergia, the Brazilian subsidiary of Spanish multinational utility company Iberdrola. The conference will take place from April 23th to 25th, 2025 at the University of Trieste, Trieste, Italy.
I was invited by Dr. Nelson Ferreira de Sousa Junior to join a research bid about the use of AI in the analysis of oral, written, and archeological records in Brazil, Portugal and Guinea-Bissau. The call was funded by the CNPq, the Brazilian National Council for Research.
I was invited by INEP to help revise the Brazilian Standard Classification of Education (Cine Brasil 2018). INEP is the major higher education (HE) policy regulator associated with the Brazilian Ministry of Education, and I was invited for my role as one of the coordinators of the Cine Brasil 2018 proposal, based on UNESCO’s International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED-F).
I published a paper with Dr. Guido Noto La Diega entitled “Can there be responsible AI without AI liability? Incentivizing generative AI safety through ex-post tort liability under the EU AI liability directive”. The paper will appear on the International Journal of Law and Information Technology, published by the Oxford University Press.
Our project “PHAWM: Participatory Harm Auditing Workbenches and Methodologies” was awarded £3.5mi by Responsible AI UK to propose approaches that enable society to take part in AI auditing over the next four years, starting May 2024. Our consortium comprises 25 investigators from 7 UK universities, namely Glasgow, Strathclyde, Stirling, Edinburgh, Sheffield, York, and King’s College London, as well as 23 external partners.
